Question: How do I install foam insulation?
Jeff writes from Mansfield, Massachusetts: "I'm improving my garage/workshop with A/C, wood heat, new workbenches and cabinets. The walls are concrete block on top of poured concrete. Does Owens Corning have a rigid foam insulation suitable for direct contact with the inside concrete walls? If so, can it be attached to the walls with an adhesive? Thanks for you prompt reply."
No problem, Jeff; I love questions about PINK insulation products. FOAMULAR (the company's brand of PINK extruded foam insulation) products are designed to be installed in direct contact with concrete in high moisture areas. FOAMULAR is a closed-cell extruded polystyrene insulation which is highly resistant to moisture. FOAMULAR insulation can be attached directly to concrete with adhesives. The adhesives MUST be "petroleum free." FOAMULAR insulation must also be covered with a "15-minute thermal barrier" such as 1/2" gypsum wallboard. When attaching the wallboard I suggest first fastening wood furring to the wall. The gypsum board can then be fastened to the wood furring. FOAMULAR insulation CANNOT hold the weight of the gypsum board so do not fasten directly to FOAMULAR insulation. As for thickness, it depends on what R-value you want to achieve. FOAMULAR insulation has an R value of 5 per inch.
