Question: Should I buy the insulation upgrade?

Robert writes from Farmingdale, New Jersey: "I am purchasing a new home and there is a package to upgrade from R-30 to R-38 for $1300. I was wondering: Is this a smart choice? Thanks for your time."

Thanks, Robert. To accurately answer your question I need to know the size of the attic and if any other energy efficiency upgrades are included in the package. I did a quick estimate on a 2,000-square-foot attic and the difference in material cost would be about $250. That cost difference is based on buying loose fill insulation at the retail price. I am guessing it would not cost a contractor much more in labor to install an additional eight bags of loose fill and certainly no difference if they are installing batts. Personally, I would not pay that much for the upgrade unless there is something else included that I am not aware of, like a furnace upgrade or a more efficient hot water heater. I hope there is something more because I want you to have an energy efficient home.
