Question: How should I insulate under stairs?

The following question comes from Hopewell Junction, New York: "The stairs to my upstairs are not insulated from the bottom (going down to my basement). What material is best used for insulation that? Should I use plain fiberglass batting with drywall? If so, which R level fiberglass is suggested?"

Answer: I recommend using PINK unfaced fiberglass insulation with drywall or Kraft-faced insulation with the facing toward the warm air if a vapor barrier is required. R-value will depend on the thickness you can install in the cavity between the stairs and the drywall.
