Question: How can I meet my building code requirement if the rafter cavity is too small?
Patrick writes from Pikeville, North Carolina: "I am finishing a bonus room over my garage and the building codes here call for at least R-30 insulation in the roof rafters. My roof rafters are only 2x8. What do you suggest I do to meet the R-30 requirement?"
Answer: Fur out the 2x8's with 2x4's to give you a total of a 10.75 inch cavity. The 2x4's can be held in place with plywood or oriented strand board (OSB) scraps from the sides.
