Home | Question: Can I insulate on top of a cement floor? | Question: Do I also need to install a plastic vapor retarder?

Question: Is there a minimum temperature for effective insulation performance?

Mark writes from Duanesburg, New York: "I have been told that you must keep your home at least 64 degrees to get the most effective use of your house insulation, any lower temp causes the insulation to not retain heat? Is this true?" Answer: No, it is not true. Insulation works no matter what the temperature is inside the home. All insulations work to slow the transfer of heat. As the interior of the home gets closer to the outside temperature the rate at which the heat leaves the home will actually get slower. If the inside and outside temperatures are the same or very close you could say that insulation is not needed. If you are comfortable with the thermostat set below 64 degrees you must have fur like I do.
