Home | Question: Are there light fixtures that allow contact with blown-in insulation? | Question: Can I insulate on top of a cement floor?

Question: What savings can I expect from added insulation?

Steve writes from Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania: "I am looking to put insulation in my attic right away. Could you tell me what type to put in and what kind of savings I could expect just by the energy efficiency itself? Also, if you have anything else to add, it would be greatly appreciated."

Answer: We cannot tell you exactly what you will save because there are so many variables that we can't know for sure. I can tell you that the U.S. Department of Energy recommends R-49 for most areas of the United States. And while we cannot tell you what your exact savings will be we know from experience that the additional insulation will probably pay for itself in a few years. You should also feel warmer and more comfortable during the winter months. The Owens Corning website has a page titled "How Much Insulation Do You Need?" that may help answer your questions. The page includes a calculator that will determine the number of packages needed for your project. One thing you will need to know is how much insulation is in the attic now, if any.
