Then for the attic I plan on using faced 12x16 r38. I already have strapping on the ceiling, so I am wondering about the vapor barrier. Do I need to staple the insulation to the ceiling, or can I just roll it out with the face down."

Answer: In the situation you describe it will be OK to just roll the product out face down.
