Question: Can I use faced insulation with the Kraft paper down?

Jim writes from Pomfret Center, Connecticut: "When installing additional batt insulation over an uninsulated attic on the board floor decking, can I use faced with kraft paper down? Should it be sliced? The 8" floor /ceiling joist cavity below the floor will be insulated when renovations are complete. Also, once batts in attic are down, can I loose lay plastic vapor barrier over top? Rafters in attic/crawl are not to be insulated and additional roof venting installed. Above is 1100 sq. ft. 1950's ranch."

Answer: Since you will be adding insulation to the ceiling below later, make sure to freely slash the paper facing. We recommend that you do not put plastic over the top of the insulation as this may trap moisture.
