Question: How should I insulate two bonus areas above the garage?

Jay writes from Fargo, North Dakota: "We are building a new house and I have taken on the task of finishing two bonus areas above the garages. The garage will be heated (probably to about 50-60 degrees F). What would be the best insulation choice for the garage ceiling/bonus area floor, and also the knee walls for the bonus areas? I was thinking of R25 rolls for the ceiling, blowing in the ceiling portions that do not have bonus area above to R38, then likely use a combo of foam board (1/2-1 inch?) and R19 for the knee walls. Think this will do?"

Answer: All of your ideas follow our recommendations except that we don't recommend adding FOAMULAR® extruded polystyrene foam insulation to the back of the knee wall. Only apply the foam to the room side and use unfaced insulation behind it.
