My house is old and I do not have soffits and my attic has so many hips that the air from the vent does not go from floor to peak when enclosed with drywall. Answer: The one inch airspace is recommended to maintain ventilation from soffit to ridge. Since you do not have soffits this can't happen. But do you have some other means to allow air to come in?
