Question: Do I still need to leave a gap between the insulation and the roof deck?
Kevin writes from Reading, Pennsylvania: "I'm starting to finish off my attic. I had a new roof put on with a ridge vent. My house is old and I do not have soffits and my attic has so many hips that the air from the vent does not go from floor to peak when enclosed with drywall. Do I still need to leave a gap between the insulation and the roof deck? Also what is the best material to insulate the roof before I frame out the knee walls and drywall?"
Answer: The one inch airspace is recommended to maintain ventilation from soffit to ridge. Since you do not have soffits this can't happen. But do you have some other means to allow air to come in? If not, there is really no need for the one inch space. To insulate this area, I naturally recommend PINK Fiberglas™ insulation.
