Question: How do I install insulation for sound control?

Chris writes from Edenton, North Carolina: "I would like to insulate (for sound control) the ceiling between my 1st and 2nd floor. I have purchased R-19 with a vapor barrier. How should I install this?"

Answer: Because you are insulating for sound control between two thermally conditioned areas, it doesn't matter which way the paper is installed. Just be sure that the paper is not left exposed to a living space. For easier installation, I recommend installing the paper in such a way that it can be stapled to the wood framing.
