Question: What is the best way to insulate a limestone foundation?

John writes from Faribault, Minnesota: "WHAT IS THE BEST WAY OF INSULATING A LIMESTONE FOUNDATION-I HAVE JUST MOVED INTO A OLD FARM HOUSE AND WISH TO FINSH OFF THE BASEMENT. I HAVE JUST ADJUSTED AROUND THE FOUNDATION OUTSIDE TO GET EVERYTHING TO SLOPE AWAY FROM THE FOUNDATION.THE BASEMENT DOESNOT HAVE ANY BAD CRACKS OR MOISTURE COMING THREW THE WALLS. IT SEEMS TO BE IN VERY GOOD SHAPE."

Answer: We recommend framing the basement walls. Typically, a gap is left between the framing and that wall. This will help with the irregular surface of the wall. Then the wall should be insulated with Fiberglas™ batt insulation with a Kraft facing. Make sure the vapor retarder is installed toward the warm-in-winter side of the structure. R-11 or R-13 is the product commonly used in basement walls.
